When restaurateur Hugh Neumann rebukes Oliver Nicholas’s very public proposal to his boyfriend during a Valentine’s Day dinner, the diverted Cupid’s arrow strikes Hugh not in the heart, but in the ass.

After a media storm of commentary, ironically pro and con, gains national steam, what Hugh begins to refer to as his personal “St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” begins to affect home life with his partner, Dominick Brodie.

The unrelenting focus forces Hugh to question whether his overreaction was pandering to his largely heterosexual clientele, or if maybe, just maybe, the incident triggered his own panic about same-sex marriage and his decade-long commitment to Dom.

As they realize their definition of a relationship is no longer the same, fractures form—and the public scrutiny threatens to crack apart the life they’ve built together.

I read this in one sitting this afternoon and found it delightful. It's a humorous story about a Valentine's Day gone wrong from the point of view of Hugh Neumann, a restaurateur, and his partner, Dom Brodie, who is a sometime actor/sometime partner in the restaurant business. Hugh inherited the restaurant Platte (plate) from his by-the-book Bavarian parents, and he intends to do them proud in all things right and proper in the sedate and ponderous tradition of Platte. When a couple comes in on Valentine's Day and it becomes obvious that it's an engagement, with one man down on his knee singing (not too well) to his intended, who then enthusiastically accepts, Hugh asks them to "dial it down." It's the first gay engagement that anybody knows of in Platte, and the couple leaves in high dudgeon after they take Hugh's request as a high insult. And then the fun begins--or not--as the media takes over and the story grows legs. Hugh is made out to be the worst sort of traitor to the gay community. Restaurant staff decamp, diners decline to dine at Platte and Hugh is even accused by Dan Savage as "...[a] kind of self-hating dinosaur...gone extinct after Boys in the Band." Hugh retorts that he's never even seen Boys in the Band and he's only 43. He sadly asks Dom if he belts his pants too high.

What's especially fun about this book is the author's facility with words, giving Hugh by turns a glib, ironic, sardonic and wry tone. The pace and length of the book are just right, giving the reader Hugh and Dom's story throughout and why marriage is a bit of a bone of contention for them. Hugh and Dom are quiet about their relationship, but not hidden and the glimpses into their life together as the story unfolds show a depth and affection (and conflict) that's moving and charming.

I read so fast, that I think I'm going to read Bended Knee again just for the sheer joy of Rodney Ross's great storytelling, words and characterizations, which are truly inspired and fun. Ruby Atwater, Rodney's friend, is not to be missed. She deserves a book of her own!

So do yourself a favor and read this engaging, funny, traumatic and very real story of how one copes when the worst happens and how everything can come out all right in the end, seemingly against all odds.

Bended Knee edition by Rodney Ross Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

To say that Rodney Ross' wonderful new book, Bended Knee, is laugh out loud funny is practically an understatement. I loved this book and read it practically in one sitting. And I did laugh out loud. Many, many times. If you read Mr. Ross' award-winning first novel, "The Cool Part of His Pillow," then you know from whence I speak. If not, what are you waiting for. Bended Knee will seal the deal. The 1991 Broadway smash, "The Will Rogers Follies," featured prominently in this hilarious story sent me right to my CD collection. I've been humming "Willimina" all day--and that ain't a bad thing, trust me. Like a bouncy show tune--hard to find these days unless it's from a revival--Bended Knee delivers. In a big way.
